본 사업은 아르테바(대표 최유주)가 주최하는 첫 번째 미디어아트 전시 프로젝트로, 코로나19로 인해 침체된 국제 예술교류의 활성화를 위해 메타버스 기반 온라인 미술展으로 운영된다.

경계공간 경험(liminoid Experiece)에 관한 작품 연구를 이어온 뉴미디어아티스트 이진준 작가(카이스트 문화기술 대학원 교수)가 크리에이티브 디렉터로 참여해 메타버스 공간의 전시 기획과 연출을 총괄하였다. 또한, 이번 프로젝트를 통해 초현실적 풍경을 그리는 Nowhere in Somewhere series 신작 <gOd, mOther and sOldier 2022> 을 볼 수 있다.

그는 작품 제작과 더불어 작품이 전시되는 메타버스 갤러리 공간기획에 참여하며, 전시공간을 작품의 연장선상에 있는 또 하나의 작품으로 구현했다. 웹사이트 뿐만 아니라 VR을 통해 체험 가능한 메타버스 전시공간을 구성함으로써 관람객이 현실세계에서 실제 전시를 관람하는 듯한 경험을 제공하는 동시에, 가상세계에서만 느낄 수 있는 색다른 경험을 제시한다. 메타버스 공간 기획 및 제작은 프랑스의 VR 연구자 Dr. Guillermo Valle와 메타버스 공간 건축을 담당한 영국의 메타버스 빌더 Paul Wilson이 함께 팀을 이루어 진행되었다.

신작 <gOd, mOther and sOldier – Nowhere in Somewhere series 2022>는 아세안 도시 조각상들을 콜라주한 제3의 가상세계를 표현한 작품으로 미국의 AI 연구자 Dr. Andrew Gambardella가 참여했으며, 오브젝트 디텍션 세그먼테이션과 인페인팅, 소닉컴프레션 등의 AI 기술을 활용하여 작업하였다. 특히, 모뉴먼트(monument)의 상징성과 의미를 인식하지 못하는 AI를 통해, 공공조각에 집단의 욕망이 어떻게 투사되어왔는지에 대한 독특한 시선을 느낄 수 있다. 또한, 이 작품을 통해 팬데믹 확산 이후 사회적∙심리적 고립감으로 피로함을 호소하는 일반 대중들에게 새로운 초현실적 풍경을 제시하는 기회를 제공하고자 하였다.

본 프로젝트는 팬데믹으로 인해 해외 교류가 어려운 상황임에도 불구하고, 아세안 7개국(태국, 베트남, 말레이시아, 싱가포르, 캄보디아, 필리핀, 인도네시아)의 큐레이터와 아티스트 8인이 비대면으로 참여하여 공동작업으로 이루어졌다. 참가자들은 각 아세안 국가의 대표적인 공공조각 작품들의 영상촬영,제작 및 기획을 함께 진행하며 물리적인 국경을 뛰어넘는 적극적인 문화교류와 협력의 가능성을 보여주었다.
“ASEAN-ROK Statue Garden” 프로젝트 연계사업으로 진행되는 메타버스 미디어아트展 “Statue Garden”은 한국국제문화교류진흥원 2021 한-아세안 문화혁신 공동 프로젝트 제작지원 공모에 선정되어 한-아세안 문화교류 프로젝트로 개최되었다.

This project is the first media art exhibition project organized by ARTEBAH, and it will be held in the metaverse as an online art exhibition to revitalize international art exchanges that have been stagnant due to COVID-19.

New media artist, Dr. Jinjoon Lee (Professor at KAIST Graduate School of Culture and Technology), who has continued his research and work on ‘liminoid experience,’ designed and directed the entire metaverse exhibition as a creative director. In the exhibition, he also presents his new video installation work entitled <gOd, mOther and sOldier – Nowhere in Somewhere series 2022> that expresses the third virtual world.

Dr Lee demonstrates ‘Total Experience’ within the metaverse exhibition space which he regards as an extension of the new video artwork as well as an artwork itself. By making the exhibition accessible through the and VR, visitors can experience the exhibition as if they were looking around in the real world, while encountering a unique spatial experience that can only be held in the virtual world. French VR researcher Dr. Guillermo Valle participated in metaverse space planning, and British metaverse builder Paul Wilson was in charge of designing and building the metaverse gallery.

The new video installation work <gOd, mOther and sOldier – Nowhere in Somewhere series 2022> is a collage video of public sculptures and monuments in ASEAN country, expressing the third virtual world. AI technology such as object detection segmentation, inpainting and sonic-compression was used to create the third urban landscape in collaboration with American AI researcher Andrew Gambardella. Especially, AI which doesn’t recognize the symbolic meaning of the monument allows us to think from different perspectives by questioning how the human history and desires are reflected in public sculptures.

Communicating online, eight curators and artists from seven ASEAN countries (Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia, the Philippines, and Indonesia) participated in planning and producing the videos of the public sculptures representing each ASEAN country. It showed the possibility of active cultural exchange and cooperation across the physical borders.
The Metaverse Media Art “Statue Garden” was organized as an extension of the “ASEAN-ROK Statue Garden” project supported by an ASEAN-ROK Joint Culture Innovation Project Grant by The Korean Foundation for International Cultural Exchange (KOFICE).

Since the hosting of the ASEAN-ROK Culture Innovation Summit in 2020, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism(MCST) and Korean Foundation for International Cultural Exchange (KOFICE) have been striving to expedite partnership and cooperation among the Republic of Korea and ASEAN member states through revitalized exchanges in culture and the arts. To this end, ASEAN-ROK Joint Culture Innovation Project Grants has been installed for public-minded projects that are carried out with Korean and ASEAN cultural resources and contemporary technologies.

The TX lab, led by Professor Jinjoon Lee, an artist and scholar, embodies two modes of operations: that of an artist studio and that of a technology lab. The TX lab pursues the balance between autonomy and responsibility through a combination of artistic and scientific practices with the two wings of emotion and intelligence spreading out. The Lab is contemplating a method of cooperation by placing humanity at the forefront of the interdisciplinary approaches, since it is our aim to support man’s coexistence with the nature and the sustainability of human race at a time of transition—from the era of division of labor to the era of automation and creation.
